Ashley’s is the more laid back sister of Living Food Bistro and Café, which I reviewed a few days ago. Located in KL’s trendy Bangsar neighborhood amongst lovely shops and cafes and a few minutes’ walk from the Bangsar Village 2 shopping mall, it has the unmistakable warmth of a passionate family-owned business. If Living Food felt like an oasis in the middle of the corporate world, Ashley’s is definitely its after hours, loosened-tie counterpart. Its cool interior, cool music, cool waiters (coincidentally my waiter was also Canadian!) and cool ambiance all lend themselves to lingering and feeling on holiday, even on a weekday.
The mission of Ashley’s is similar to that of its big sister Living Food, which is to serve real, honest, clean and healthy food while bringing together the best of interesting ingredients (most interesting to me being a few ingredients from Borneo, which is where the family is originally from), creative cooking and exciting eating. And let me tell you now: boy, does it deliver. The expertise of Ashley, whom it was lovely to meet, is remarkable for such a young chef. I tried some of their menu’s vegan and raw vegan highlights and wanted to share with you yet another fantastic option in the Malaysian Capital for healthy vegan eating.
Living Mushroom Foie Gras
I began with the living mushroom raw vegan foie gras served with sundried tomato, raw, gluten free, rosemary flatbread, a dash of truffle oil and some fresh crudités. I love truffle oil, so the smell of this won me over even before I even tasted it. The mouthfeel is pure creaminess; silky goodness that just made me want to close my eyes around each mouthful. I have no idea how this is made, but it is definitely the best vegan interpretation of foie gras I have ever tried. It is absolutely heavenly. The freshness and crunchiness of the crudités adds a nice contrast that cuts through the richness of the pate.
Living Pulled Eggplant
I was then served a plate of the beautifully presented and equally tasty living pulled eggplant: dainty rolls of eggplant, sliced wafer-thin, that have been marinated with chili before being dehydrated and stuffed with velvety nut cream, served on a bed of roasted sweet red pepper sitting atop wholesome flaxseed crackers. These tasty bites are all about the contrast of the chewy smoky eggplant skin wrappers, the silky nut cheese I came acquainted with in the Living Enchilada, the juicy peppers and crunchy crackers. It’s a beautiful presentation and an equally tasty and balanced dish. So unique.
Red Veggie Burger
The color of the bun in this striking dish comes from rice fermented with Monascus purpureus yeast, a supplement used to regulate cholesterol level and help in digestion. The bread (as well as everything else at Ashley’s) is made on site – they even grind their own flour for optimal freshness. The burger is yummy and juicy, the accompanying veggies are crunchy and delicious. It’s nice to try one of their non-raw vegan items and see that the quality and attention to detail is carried across the whole menu.
Salty caramel apple gateaux
A nut and apple base topped with vegan caramel, garnished with dehydrated apples and sprinkled with cinnamon. The dehydrated apple slices melt in the mouth and the caramel, cinnamon and nuts bring all the components of a scrumptious apple pie in a beautifully presented while light and delicious end to a fantastic meal.
I stayed in the Bangsar area while I visited Kuala Lumpur, so for me it was just a short walk, but a visit to Ashley’s by living food is most definitely worth the detour. It is located a ten minute walk from Bangsar LRT station in a lovely neighborhood with more vegan restaurants, malls and shops. The quality of the vegan food is stellar and the commitment to healthy eating is truly inspiring.
