My 35 by 35 travel and adventure bucket list

10th January 2016

2016 travel bucket list

2016 is here! I will be turning 35 at the end of the year, and while this big number makes me LOL in correlation to my level of “adultness”, I can’t help but notice that fear is still holding me back sometimes in life and this is the year I would like to change that. So I made a 35 by 35 bucket list. In this year that will be leading me to my 35th birthday, I have challenged myself to do all the things I have never done, mostly things that absolutely frighten me and that I always told myself I would never do, but also things I have never done for absolutely no reason. I know this list is completely insane and chances are high I will not be able to do even half of it, but listing this and challenging myself to some of these things I hope is a first step in taking actions to ridding me of my fears.

Do the things that scare you!

Me being scared of bats…. O_o

So. Ready, set: here goes nothing!

1. Go skydiving
One of those things I said I would rather die than do. I feel like if I do this, than everything will be possible.

2. Bungee jump
Ditto to that first one, maybe ever worse.

3. Sing at a karaoke bar
Why on earth I am still scared of being ridiculous?

4. Do one last Working Holiday Visa

German working holiday visa for Canadians

I’m going to Germany! While freelancing and working as a blogger has been working out for me for the most part while I was in South East Asia, since I started cycling and moved to Europe where life is a tad more expensive than in Thailand, I have had less time to work. So I will be basing myself in Berlin from next month! So excited!

5. Go on a rollercoaster

6. Try rock Climbing
Check! Well, bouldering, that counts, right? I’m a big fan!

7. Do the splits
Because I love using my yoga practice to learn new party tricks!

8. Zip Lining

9. Fencing
Just to wear the suit and look badass!

10. Bake a cake
Why have I never done this?

11. Learn a new language
I’m working on this. Nicht so gut, so weit

12. Kite Surfing

13. Abseiling

14. Revisit Paris as a vegan
My friend Amandine visited the Shangri La for a vegan afternoon tea in Paris the other day and I have been completely obsessed about doing the same!

15. Go play golf
That’s what old people do, no?

16. Archery

17. Go on a hot air balloon ride

Hot air balloons over Bagan, Myanmar (Burma)

18. Visit Scandinavia
This has been high on top of my list for many years and hopefully 2016 is the year it happens!

19. Go on a helicopter ride
Check! Proof:

20. Do a handstand

21. Take a dance class
Any. I need to dance more.

22. Wakeboarding

23. Attend an outdoor music festival

24. Learn a legit video editing software
I am using Adobe Premiere Element right now and winging it. I have no idea how to do more elaborate editing such as color correction and stuff like that. As a trained visual artist, I feel this is a tool I have to learn better.

25. Go see a musical
Not that I especially want to as it sounds mortally boring, but… 35 things, eh.

26. Visit Greece

27. Teach a yoga class
Since completing my yoga teacher training in 2015, I never, ever taught.

28. Start paying my student loan
I don’t like #28 🙁

29. Hike up a big mountain
I hiked up El Teide Volcano in Tenerife:

30. Learn to surf once and for all
I tried quite a few times in the past and either failed or stood up on one of these ridiculous extremely buoyant boards in teeny tine waves. It’s the only water sport that makes me frightened of the ocean.

31. Go to Africa

32. Try sandboarding

33. Make vegan cheese

34. Start house sitting

35. Zorbing?
I didn’t know what else, I just googled that. Looks fun enough!

What are your goals for the New Year?

Love this list! First off, I agree – how have you never made a cake? Holy cow! Self birthday gift, I say! Bungee jumping and skydiving are AWESOME. As is rock climbing. I suggest Lightroom. I use it, I love it, it’s simple.

Lastly, I am also afraid of bats. They just fly around all willy nilly in the dark!

Great list. I look forward to your stay in Germany and watching you cross some of these off your list.

What a coincidence! I made my bucket list last evening :-))
I am totally with you regarding skydiving, language and split learning and the house sitting.
Wish you energy for all of it, when is your birthday? Sounds like a tough schedule to do all of this in one year!

35 by 35 bucket list is inspiring. I have a few years more to that, I think I should start listing one too.

It’s a pity you did not conqure your fear for bats in Battambang, Cambodia. I visited a cave where every evening bats would be out to look for food. There are so many bats that it would take at least 30 minutes for all of them to exit the cave.

All the best in taking the adventure you’ve listed.

Haha, yes, I went to that bat cave in Battambang, it’s one fear I have been able to conquer LOL. I mostly just thought that photo was hilarious 😉

Haha, do a handstand was on my 30 before 30 list! I did one (with a little help from my friends!) on a cliff in Ireland! I’m also learning a new language this year, it feels ridiculous to travel this often and only be able to speak one language. I also conquered my Karaoke fear a few years ago, my only tip is to pick a song you’re 100% sure you know ALL the words to! I’ve gotten up there before and realised that I totally only know all the words to the chorus and that’s never good. As for whether horses like being ridden, I don’t think so. From a purely animal rights perspective I don’t believe that animals should ever be used for our entertainment which is what’s happening when humans ride horses. I also feel like any activity where an animal needs to be “broken in” before people can ride them can’t be good for them.

Thanks so much Jojo, I realize I should have done a little research before deciding that I wanted to ride a horse. I know a few vegans who have horses and ride them, so I never questioned that. I’ve not changed that for going to the Czech Republic haha! 🙂

    Hey,

if you get to Bavaria sometime after August I can probably help you out with numbers 14, 16, 29 and possibly 22… Und natürlich mit 11 😉
Hope you’ve found a starting point in Berlin already.

All the best and safe travels!

WHAT YOU’VE NEVER BAKED A CAKE?? I’ve also never been on a rollercoaster though… I’m amazed at how many of these I’ve done. Although they’re mainly the boring things like playing golf, learning languages, and fencing. If you want company for jumping off/out of things, count me in! They’re on my bucket list too. Maybe I need to do a 25 by 25 list?

Love this list! So many terrifying things! The older I get the less I want to do things that could cause bodily harm lol. So I won’t be joining you for some of these things 😉 But a lot of them sound exhilarating!

Good luck on your list! I will be 35 at the end of this year too and I’ve made a similar list 😉. I can help you with musical recommendations as a New Yorker and theater lover. I won’t be painful, I promise.

Nice list! Definitely some things and places to add to our lists as we are getting close to 35. Check out an overland trip through parts of Africa and you might be able to knock a whole bunch of these off in one go! 😉 It can be a little pricey, but we wouldn’t have traded it for anything…especially the bungee jump!

Good luck and keep up the great work!!!

Wow! How do you make vegan cheese? Is it with soya beans? Yum! I wanna do that too! Great list, I have been making my 30 by 30 and it’s not half as adventurous, you’ve made me realise I need to reboot it! Caroline Alice 🙂
