5 Quirky Places to Explore in New York City

24th September 2019

When planning a trip to New York City, most people head for the big sights and tourist hotspots. It’s true, they’re hard to resist especially if you’re there for a limited amount of time, but if you have time it’s worth exploring more of this fantastic city. Tick off the Empire State Building and visit Central Park, by all means, but give yourself time for spontaneous adventures.

In New York City, you have so many great options to choose from. If you need a bit of inspiration, here are 5 of the quirkiest and coolest things you can do in New York City which are a little further off the beaten track.

1. Take a Hip Hop Tour in The Bronx

It doesn’t get much cooler than the hip hop music scene and if you’re a fan you should try and catch the hip hop tour of the Bronx and Harlem. Your guides will be hip hop artists themselves and will take you to some key venues and locations in the music genre’s history.

2. Explore North Central Park

Central Park is obviously a famous landmark and not exactly an unusual place to visit for NYC tourists, but most tend to stay in the south of the park. There you’ll find the Bethseda Fountain, Cleopatra’s Needle and the Metropolitan Museum, but there is so much else to see.

The park is 315 hectares and home to plenty of attractions including the memorial to John Lennon, Strawberry Fields, which is in front of the building where he lived at the time of his death. Other highlights include the Gothic Belvedere Castle, the wild area of the North Woods and the Ravine between Huddlestone Arch and Glen Span where you’ll find a stream with waterfalls falling through the rocks.

3. Drinks at Please Don’t Tell

If you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy a few drinks, it doesn’t get much more fun than the secretive speakeasy, Please Don’t Tell (PDT). It’s a bar inspired by the Prohibition period in the US and has to be entered via a telephone booth. Reservations can only be made from 3pm on the day you want to visit and you may have to be persistent in order to get through as it’s very popular.

If you want to start your trip as glamorously as possible, especially if you can afford all the stops and whistles, why not charter a private jet to start your trip off right? Visit https://www.stratosjets.com/jet-charter-flights/new-york-city/ to take a look at prices and arrive in style.

4. Mmuseumm

Mmuseumm is a mini-museum inside a small freight elevator in Cortlandt Alley. It displays a fascinating collection of objects which have been ‘overlooked, dismissed, or ignored’. The objects appear to be random or even trash on first inspection, but each tells a story about the modern world. There are small guides with the objects to explain their significance.

5. Ghostbuster Firehouse

Thousands of famous movies have been filmed in NYC and if movie tours are of interest you won’t be short on choice, but the Ghostbuster Firehouse is a particular favorite. It’s a real firehouse in a 20th-century building in Tribeca in Downtown Manhattan so you can’t go inside but you can still get a great photo.
