I realise that what I’ve been putting here about Berlin, and not only but also including the vegan scene, has been totally hedonistic. Vegan burgers, all the fast food, clubbing naked and plain just getting naked. I’ve done a pretty decent job in my now three years in Berlin, I’d say. But Berlin is not just that, I promise you. It’s also a mecca for all things health-minded, with yoga studios, green and healthy restaurants, temples, parks and amazing fitness options. All the decadent stuff I’ve written about is what got me excited when I arrived. What I’m telling you today is what is making me stick around.
So without further ado, let me introduce you to the beautiful and wonderful healthy and green food of Berlin. Los gehts!
THE HEALTHY FOOD GUIDE OF BERLIN
This wonderful little oasis in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg is your antidote to the Winter months’ blah. Here you will find all the takeaway cold press juices your heart desires, as well as ready-made juice cleanse, that you can either pick up or order online and have delivered. There are also shots, each of them associated with a health benefit: recover, get through the week, relax, etc. There are 12 staple juices always on offer, a selection ranging from pure green to fruitier things, plus some seasonal or experimental things, like cold brew coffee with coconut milk – yum. The juices are HPP treated (high pressure rather than heat to kill bacteria), meaning they have a good shelf life.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner can be had at this beautiful Mitte restaurant. The decor is amazing and zen, with huge plants crawling all over the space. The highlight to me are the smoothie bowls, where you pick your base and toppings (or pick from one of the pre-made options: açai bowl, berry blue, etc). Beware that there are a few non-vegan options (poached eggs, salmon, venison, but they are all add ons, the base menu is all vegan). Cold press juices are also on offer. Lunch and dinner are warm bowls as well as salads (you can also make your own. Excellent coffee, smoothies and organic cold press juices. Juice cleanses also available. There’s also a new range of cosmetics and supplements.
Oatmeal lovers rejoice, there’s a small breakfast chain entirely devoted to wonderful bowls of steel-cut goodness with all sorts of toppings. The bowls are available in two sizes and are super affordable, they are as delicious as they are pretty and nutritious. On top of that, the spicy hot chocolate is great, most of the food is vegan (all of it is vegetarian) and there’s also a great selection of wraps, salads, and sweets to eat there or for takeaway. Yas!
At The Juicery, everything is straight out of some fancy pants’ Instagram account and 100% nutritious and delicious. The Juicery Superfood Smoothies is a cozy little family business that makes me feel like I’m at some little Thai fruit shack on an island and I love it. There are fruits hanging everywhere and the best smoothies you will find in Berlin. A little pricey perhaps, but what you get for your money is really amazing, organic, and beautifully presented. Also on the menu are smoothie bowls, cold press juices and shots.
Two Planets promises “dope ass toasts, juices, smoothies, shit hot roasts, and ice cold brews” and that’s pretty much exactly what they deliver. It’s a tiny and quirky place in Neukölln that feels more like Australia. Also on the menu are excellent breakfast bowls. Everything is vegetarian with many options for vegans. Great place to chill and do a bit of work too!
A little hole in the wall that dishes out healthy vegan and vegetarian breakfast and lunch bowls as well as smoothies with all sorts of superfood. It’s not the most inspired decor, but the food is fresh, nutritious and delicious, and the location is great, just off Rosenthaler Platz. You can also have everything to go. Numas is one random chicken breast add-on to be amazing.
The Jivamukti Canteen is located in the Mitte branch of my favourite yoga studio and offers a simple menu of all vegan nutritious healthy fares like salads, soups, stews, and porridge, as well as cold press juices, smoothies and great coffee. Often filled with dogs and always with yogis (duh), it’s a lovely place to hang after or before class.
