We all know the early bird catches the worm, but it can be extremely difficult to make this happen if you’re more of a night owl. For most people though, the morning can be the most productive part of the day providing we are feeling fresh, so it’s natural to want to get up and be raring to go.
It’s a lot easier in theory than in practice, so we’ve pulled together some tips on how to wake up earlier and make the most of the day. Take a look below and see if any of them will work for you…
Establish a routine
Obviously, if you go to bed very late, then you aren’t going to be getting up at the crack of dawn feeling as fresh as a daisy. And if you’ve been in this habit for some time, it can be difficult to change. So start going to bed just half an hour earlier each night so you start getting used to it and soon you will (hopefully) be dropping off early enough to get up with the larks. If you struggle to sleep in general, speak to the experts at Click Pharmacy who will be able to advise you of certain sleep aids to help you drop off.
Turn off your phone
Not only because constantly scrolling on social media can damage your mental health, but the stimulation and the blue backlight can force your brain to stay awake or prevent you from falling sound asleep.
Ensure you have an alarm that will wake you up sufficiently. You could put it on the other side of the room to force you to get up to turn it off. You could set multiple alarms, so if you turn one-off, then there are back up options. You could even invest in one of those alarms that wakes you with a light that mimics the sun rising in to have a more natural start to the day.
Avoid caffeine too late in the day
The well-known stimulating effects of caffeine will delay or interrupt your sleep and make you feel groggy in the morning. As such reserve your coffee for the AM.
Eat a balanced diet
Your diet shouldn’t include too much-refined sugar or anything too highly processed but whole grains, proteins, healthy fats and fruit and veg. Eating regular meals with small snacks in between will help regulate your blood sugar, preventing huge spikes and falls which could interrupt your sleeping pattern. And don’t eat too late either or your body will be digesting it while you’re trying to sleep!
Getting straight out of bed in the morning rather than lying there snoozing will make you feel wider awake and more likely to be positive. Maybe head straight to the shower or if you can, have a workout or even just a walk. This will get your blood pumping and make you feel fresh and alert.
Starting your day the right way begins with how you end the one before, so don’t neglect a good routine and healthy other practices such as exercise and eating right. The new ‘early bird’ you will thank you for it!
