Travelling as a single person can be incredibly daunting, especially for lone females. Personal safety is of paramount importance, and you must do everything you can to ensure that you have a very good time in your chosen location, without putting yourself at undue risk.
It is so easy to feel overwhelmed and even scared when you first start travelling solo, but you should not allow yourself to worry unduly about the risks. If you spend all of your time worrying, you will miss out on all of the amazing things to do in Costa Rica like the Manuel Antonio National Park and Arenal Volcano. Making a good Costa Rica budget first is a great way to feel confident.
Besides, if you can at least act confident and look like you are meant to be there, you are much less likely to come to any harm than you would if you looked like a typical lost tourist.
It is also important to bear in mind that the vast majority of people in Costa Rica are wonderfully friendly individuals who will go to great lengths to assist you. As long as you are sensible, there is little to fear from traveling solo there.
Do Your Research
Never head off into a new situation without first doing your research. Learn as much about the culture of Costa Rica, including its customs, dress and the best and worst areas of the country to visit, and you will put yourself in good stead to have a safe and exciting holiday.
If you find yourself in one of the more dangerous areas of Costa Rica, such as Quito, for whatever reason, it is always a good idea to walk quickly and with confidence. Try to match the pace of other individuals in the vicinity and look like you belong, and you are less likely to be single out as a target.
Costa Rica is such a fun and free place that it can be so easy to let your guard down, especially during the long, balmy evenings. However, as a solo female traveler, it pays to stay alert to your surroundings. Try not to drink excessively and keep a clear head to keep yourself safe.
Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
One of the main reasons to travel solo is to get out of your comfort zone and push yourself to do things you would never have dreamed of. Costa Rica is the perfect place to do this because there are so many unique activities, from whale watching to hiking in the wilderness, available for travelers.
Talk to the People Around You
Asking questions of locals, taxi drivers, and fellow travelers will furnish you with a wealth of information about Costa Rica, which will help you to plan safe routes, avoid dangerous areas and ensure that you do not do anything that could put your personal safety at risk. It is, of course, also a good way to make new friends and find out more about the wonderful country of Costa Rica.
