Travel has the power to broaden the mind, enrich the soul, and bless our lives with a whole myriad of magical memories we can look back on fondly for years to come. With such wonderful and exciting benefits on offer, it’s no surprise that countless people set off on flights, cruises, road trips, and more each and every year.
Your travels might take you to tropical rainforest on the other side of the world, ancient ruins of historic civilizations, beautiful beaches bathed in sunshine, or even to big cities not that far from your own home. In any case, it’s wise to prepare properly before you go, and this guide will look at some tips to help you get around in new and unfamiliar cities.
Being in a new city for the first time can feel quite overwhelming, after all. Cities are often filled with people and tall buildings around every corner. Getting around, staying safe, and seeing all you want to see can be quite a challenge, but there are some simple ways to make the most of the experience. Here’s how to do it.
Learn Some of the Language
If you’re heading to a big city in a foreign country with a different language, knowing at least a few words of that language can prove exceptionally useful in terms of helping you feel a little more at home and finding your way around.
If you get lost, for example, it helps to be able to stop one of the locals and be able to ask for a little help, and it’s always polite and pleasant for native inhabitants to see tourists who have made the effort to try and converse with them in their own language.
Always Look Both Ways
When it comes to travelling around big cities, you’re probably going to be doing a lot of walking. This is usually the best way to get from place to place as a traveller, as it allows you to really cover a lot of ground and see as much of the city as possible.
However, you have to be careful, especially when it comes to crossing the road. It might sound like a simple activity, but traffic rules and attitudes towards pedestrians can vary wildly from place to place. Make sure to look both ways, find safe crossings, and so on to avoid getting into a pedestrian accident.
Don’t Wear Yourself Out
When exploring a new city, it can be tempting to try and fit as many activities as possible into every single day, especially if you have limited time in that location and want to make the most of each and every second. While this is perfectly understandable, it’s also important not to push yourself or your fellow travellers too hard.
Trying to do too much in a single day could lead to you rushing through many activities and not really making the most of them, and it might lead to you causing yourself physical harm if you fail to take breaks and keep yourself energized and hydrated with food and drink, so don’t forget to look after yourself.
Be a Tourist
Some travellers almost seem to feel ashamed of the fact that they’re tourists. They’ll avoid the typical ‘tourist traps’ or fail to really make the most of the experience for fear of being looked down on by the locals, but it can be a wonderful feeling to truly embrace your inner tourist.
There’s nothing wrong with getting ‘off the beaten path’ and trying to see some hidden gems, but there’s also nothing wrong with visiting the main touristic locations of a place, like the Colosseum in Rome or Big Ben in London. So visit the places you want to visit, take the photos you want to take, and live your vacation as you want it, without worrying about what anyone else thinks.
Make the Most of Apps
These days, pretty much everyone walks around each day with a smartphone in their pocket or purse, and these little devices have proven invaluable to travellers over the years, offering a whole range of apps and features that can help to improve your vacations.
Phones aren’t just great for taking photos of your travels; they can also offer GPS apps, public transport guides to help you get on the right subway train, language apps for speaking with locals, and much more.
Exploring new cities can be a very exciting experience, and following these tips will help you make the most of each day while staying safe the entire time too.
