The US is one of my favourite destinations to visit for the sheer size and variety of its landscape, amazingly varied climate and excellent vegan food scene. I never get bored of visiting! There is always something new to explore. It’s a little known fact that I myself lived in San Diego for almost a year back in 2005. I absolutely loved it there.
As a Canadian, I am part of the few lucky ones who can pretty much just walk across the border and into the USA as I see fit, however, my ex-boyfriend was British and I have been a witness of the steps involved in applying for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), a streamlined visa waiver program where you do not need to obtain a visa prior to visiting the country. It seemed highly annoying at times, and boy if we had known then there were services to streamline everything and help to make our lives easier, that would have sure been swell. But oh well, live and learn.
It sounds easy enough, but as it is the case with many online forms to visit countries, the ESTA application can be a little tricky to navigate through and the slightest error could have you cancel or postpone your trip. Luckily, there are easy steps you can take that will make the process time-saving and easy as 1-2-3! Are you ready to fastrack your way to your ESTA? Off we go!
But first – What exactly is an ESTA?
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization is an online system that helps determine in advance if you are eligible to visit the United States or not. If you are from one of the participating 38 countries listed below, consider yourself lucky! You are able to apply for an ESTA, which, if approved, will then be valid for two years and allow you to visit the United States visa-free for up to 90 days each time:
Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom.
While this sounds like a helpful, foolproof and easy way to go about visiting the United States, applying for an ESTA doesn’t necessarily guarantee you will be granted access to the USA and there is also the eventuality that your US ESTA application could be declined altogether because of a mistake you made while filling in the forms. You don’t want that.
