Luckily, there are ways to prevent the onset of stress and physical weaknesses so you can remain strong, healthy and focused.
Select a Major you Enjoy
There are many things to consider before selecting a college major. First, you should select one that you have a real interest in and enjoy doing. While there may be many subjects you excel in or a family history of prominent doctors or lawyers, choosing one that you like will keep you focused. It will also make it easier to complete midterm papers, projects, and the required reading. Doing something you enjoy like fashion merchandising can help to reduce your stress level by completing assignments on time.
Regular physical activity is essential to every person, young and old alike. For college students with a hefty workload and a part-time job, exercise is especially important. It gives them a way to unwind and reduce stress levels, maintain a healthy weight and stay physically and mentally fit. With a hectic schedule, it’s necessary to take an hour two to three times a week to think about nothing. Clear your mind with a long brisk walk or jog in the fresh air, take an aerobics class or acquire a gym membership. Or, if you prefer, sign up for sports at the college. The point is to do something that accelerates the heart and gets the blood pumping. The benefits of exercise last long after your workout ends, allowing you to focus, stay energized and improve your self-esteem.
A Healthy Diet
Adjusting to campus life is difficult for many college freshmen. It’s the first time they are completely free to make their own decisions. With all the choices in front of them like pizza and other fast foods, it’s easy to leave out the important healthy items like fresh fruits and vegetables. With a lot of classes crammed into a 6 to 8-hour time frame many students skip lunch and then gorge at dinner time. This is no good for the body. Instead, try carrying a healthy snack like a yogurt, nuts, granola bar or a piece of fruit to get something with a nutritional value in prior to dinner. This way you won’t have extreme hunger pains and you can make healthier choices with your mind instead of your stomach. Getting the proper vitamins from things like whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and legumes, will make you feel better, transferring over to your studies. It will also prevent you from getting sick often.
Pulling an all-nighter once in a while is ok, but doing this consistently to keep up with the workload will take a toll on the body quickly. When you don’t get enough sleep you walk around in a fog with reduced focus and memory from the previous day. This means that you will have difficulty applying the lessons learned just a day earlier. A better approach is to budget your time wisely. Get a message board and keep track of the assignments and their due dates. With a system in place, you’ll stay organized and on top of the workload instead of constantly playing catch up. It will also allow you to keep your mind sharp and focused on the task at hand instead of pre-occupying your mind with other pending assignments.
College is an exciting time in a young adult’s life. It’s a place where you can realize your dreams by earning a degree in a profession you enjoy and then go on to prosper for all your hard efforts. If you stay organized, eat right, exercise weekly and get plenty of rest before you know it college is over and you are living the dream.
