Tangier

I started my Moroccan adventure in Tangier, located at the crossroads of Europe and Africa. It’s just 76 kilometers from the Spanish city of Ceuta! Tangier is easily accessible, with frequent flights to Tangier International Airport from across Europe.

Tangier is a city rich in history, and its strategic position has made it a melting pot of cultures. Take a stroll around Tangier’s medina (old town), where its rich culture is evident in the architecture, cuisine, and arts.

The Kasbah Museum, housed in the former Sultan’s palace, is the perfect place to learn about the city’s history. If you’re more interested in literature, you could visit the American Legation Museum, where you’ll learn about Tangier’s connections with American writers and diplomats. Finish your visit with a stroll along the city’s waterfront and enjoy the views of the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea.

Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen, often called the Blue City, is known for its striking blue-washed buildings that create a unique atmosphere. Nestled in the Rif Mountains, this small town offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of Morocco’s larger cities. The medina, with its narrow, winding streets, is a joy to explore, filled with local crafts, textiles, and art.

Make sure to visit the Spanish Mosque, which provides stunning panoramic views and is worth the short hike. The Kasbah, a restored fortress in the heart of the medina, offers a glimpse into the town’s history and also has beautiful gardens.

For nature lovers, I recommend visiting the nearby Talassemtane National Park. You can take in the rugged beauty of the park, including mountains and waterfalls.

Fez

Just a 4-hour drive from Chefchaouen, lies Fez, a city steeped in history. Home to the world’s oldest university, the University of Al Quaraouiyine, there is no shortage of historical sights to take in. Wandering through the well-preserved medieval architecture and labyrinthine medina, you’ll feel transported back in time! Take some time to browse vibrant souks brimming with spices, textiles, and traditional Moroccan crafts.

Fez is also famous for leather tanning, so make sure to visit the Chaouwara Tanneries. You can observe the traditional process of leather dyeing from nearby terraces. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the city, visit the serene Jnan Sbil Gardens.

Casablanca

After Fez, head back to the coast to Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city. Known for its cosmopolitan vibe, it offers a different experience from the more traditional Moroccan cities. The city’s most iconic landmark is the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world. Set on the city’s oceanfront, it is well worth a visit!

You’ll love taking a stroll along the Corniche, a beachfront promenade lined with cafes, restaurants, and nightlife spots. The Royal Palace and the Cathedral of Sacré-Cœur are also notable sites. As Morocco’s biggest city, Casablanca has a diverse culinary scene. Thankfully, there are plenty of restaurant options for vegans. Try dining at Niya, a fabulous vegan restaurant near the center. The city has no shortage of traditional Moroccan restaurants, but there is also a lot of international cuisine on offer.

Taghazout

Taghazout

From Casablanca, head south to Taghazout, a small fishing city that has become a laid-back surfing hotspot. Its relaxed atmosphere draws surfers from around the world, who come to ride the consistent waves and enjoy the simple, coastal lifestyle. The beaches here are ideal for both beginners and experienced surfers, with lots of surf schools offering lessons and equipment rentals. For those who prefer yoga, Taghazout also has several retreats offering yoga sessions with sweeping Atlantic Ocean views. If you’re interested in doing some yoga while on vacation, you can read my guide to the best yoga and surf retreats in Morocco.

Beyond surfing, Taghazout offers a glimpse into local life with its quiet streets, small cafes, and fresh seafood. There are also some trendy vegan restaurants in the city, such as the Red Clay Cafe! The village’s development has brought a mix of traditional and modern accommodations, ranging from basic hostels to boutique hotels.
